Outlook failed due to fatal error

When opening Practice CS or accessing a function in Practice CS that interfaces with Microsoft Outlook (such as mail, calendars, or tasks) you may receive the following error:

"Outlook failed due to fatal error: Outlook dependent files have been moved on your machine."

This error indicates that Practice CS is not able to integrate with Microsoft Outlook. If you receive this error, follow the instructions in this article to troubleshoot.  

Disable integration

If your firm does not plan on integrating Practice CS and Microsoft Outlook, you can disable integration to stop this error message. For details, see How to disable the Microsoft Outlook interface.

Virtual Office CS/SaaS

  1. Outlook must be configured in Virtual Office CS/SaaS.
  2. Outlook must be opened before Practice CS and remain open while working in Practice CS.
  3. In order to use calendars, you must have Microsoft Exchange enabled. See Enabling Microsoft Exchange in Virtual Office CS or SaaS for a NetStaff CS user for more information.
  1. Close both Practice CS and Microsoft Outlook. 
  2. Follow the instructions in the Using the Log Off Applications utility to clear any hung sessions.
  3. Open Microsoft Outlook.
  4. Open Practice CS. If you receive the message that Outlook has failed while opening Practice CS, contact Support at (800) 968-0600. 
  5. If you are able to get in to Practice CS without errors, leave Microsoft Outlook open while you work in Practice CS. If you continue to receive the "Outlook has failed" error, contact Support at (800) 968-0600.

Non-Virtual Office CS/SaaS

  1. Microsoft Outlook must be configured according to the Microsoft Office Guidelines for CS Professional Suite
  2. Outlook must be opened before Practice CS, and it must remain open while working in Practice CS.
  3. In order to use calendars, you need to have Microsoft Exchange with access to a public folder in Outlook. It doesn't matter if you have Microsoft Exchange hosted through a third party. Consult your IT professional or Exchange host to set up public folders in Outlook. To designate the public folder that Practice CS will use see Selecting a public Outlook folder for client mail.

Basics

  1. Close both Practice CS and Microsoft Outlook. 
  2. Open Microsoft Outlook. If Outlook is not functioning (i.e. you receive an error when opening it, you cannot send or receive emails, or you cannot access the calendar), contact your IT professional for assistance. 
  3. Open Practice CS. If you receive the message that Outlook has failed while opening Practice CS, continue to the troubleshooting steps below. 
  4. If you are able to get in to Practice CS without errors, leave Microsoft Outlook open while you work in Practice CS. If you continue to receive the "Outlook failed" error, continue to the troubleshooting steps below. 

Run as administrator

As stated in the Microsoft Office Guidelines for CS Professional Suite, both Practice CS and Outlook must be running at the same privilege level. We recommend running both Practice CS and Outlook as administrator. To run or install Microsoft Outlook as administrator, work with your firm's IT professional.

If you are not able to run or install Outlook as administrator, verify that Practice CS is not running as administrator. Right-click the Practice CS desktop icon and choose Properties > Compatibility tab and uncheck Run as administrator

Repair Practice CS

  1. Go to the Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Right-click Practice CS.
  3. Choose Repair.

Repair Microsoft Office 

Questions or problems with repairing Microsoft Office should be directed to your IT professional.

  1. Go to Control the Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Right-click Microsoft Office.
  3. Choose Repair. If Repair is not an option, choose Change, then choose Repair on the setup dialog that opens. 

Reinstall Practice CS and Microsoft Office

Questions or problems with reinstalling Microsoft Office should be directed to your IT professional.

  1. Uninstall Practice CS from the workstation by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features, right-clicking Practice CS and choosing Uninstall. 
  2. Uninstall Microsoft Office from the workstation. This must be completed by your firm's IT professional.
  3. Restart the workstation. 
  4. Install Microsoft Office 32-bit. This version must be 32-bit and it must be completed by your firm's IT professional. 
  5. Install Practice CS by browsing to X:\WinCSI\Practice CS\DESKTOP and running Setup.exe, where X represents the mapped network drive or server name where Practice CS is installed.

You may need to reset the user's clientsettings.xml file using the Rename User Files button. Before you do this, make sure the user knows their Practice CS staff ID and password.
