Question

How do I create a nonresident alien return ?

Answer

The client must be classified as a nonresident alien. When setting up a new client, choose File > New Client. In the New Client dialog, click the 1040 option, select Nonresident Alien or Nonresident Alien (EZ) from the drop-down list, and click OK.

To change the entity type code on an existing client, open the client, choose File > Client Properties, click the 1040 option, select Nonresident Alien or Nonresident Alien (EZ) from the drop-down list, and click OK.

Note: If Form W-7 (Application for Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is present in the tax return, the filing instructions will include specific information for filing Form W-7 with the completed tax return. If a completed tax return is not required to be attached to Form W-7 as a result of meeting one of the exceptions, the filing instructions will need to be customized for the particular exception. To customize the filing instructions, choose Setup > 1040 Individual > Federal tab, and click the Filing Instructions button.
