Alternate Electronic Return Originator (ERO) and paid preparer presentations (1065)

Alerts and notices

The following table provides information about the data entry required to use alternative presentations of Electronic Return Originator (ERO) and preparer information on versions of Form 8453 for 1065, 1041, and 1120 returns.

  • Column 1: ERO - UltraTax CS defaults to the licensed firm information for the ERO information on Form 8453-PE and in the electronic file. This column indicates whether you want the license information or alternate information to show as the ERO.
  • Column 2: Preparer block - UltraTax CS uses the paid preparer information entered in the Preparer block field, which you designate by choosing File > Client Properties. This column indicates whether you want to designate the paid preparer as the source of license information, whether you want to designate an alternate paid preparer (for example, when a client has had the return prepared by another preparer but wants you to electronically file the return), or whether the return was either self- or taxpayer-prepared or prepared by the IRS.
  • Column 3: Single or multiple ERO / Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN)
An EFIN is a six-digit number assigned by the IRS to accepted Electronic Return Originators (EROs). The EFIN is also used as the first six digits in the 11-digit preparer Personal Identification Number (PIN).
options - UltraTax CS allows you to designate whether a single EFIN and ERO or multiple EFINs and EROs are being used. This function is enabled by clicking either the All returns in this office will file using EFIN option or the Several EFINs are being used option in the Setup > Office Configuration > E-Filing tab. For additional information, see Defining the 1065 electronic filing configuration.
  • Column 4: UltraTax CS data entry - This column describes the steps you need to perform in UltraTax CS to achieve a particular result.
    • To enter alternate ERO information, choose Setup > Office Configuration, click the E-Filing tab, and click the ERO button. In the Electronic Return Originator (ERO) dialog, enter the alternate ERO information. If you are both the paid preparer and the ERO, then no further data entry is required.
    • To enter alternate preparer information (if, for example, you are only the ERO and the return was prepared by another preparer), choose Setup > System Configuration, click the Firm tab, and click the PRP Preparer Block button. In the PRP Preparer Block dialog, click the Add button, and enter the necessary information for the preparer in the corresponding fields. Then, open the applicable client in UltraTax CS, choose File > Client Properties, and select the preparer block from the drop-down list for the Preparer block field.

      Notes

  • Column 5: Presentation on Form 8453-PE - This column describes the information that will or will not appear in the ERO's Use Only and Paid Preparer Use Only sections of Form 8453-PE. The ERO's Use Only section will always display the ERO-related data entered in UltraTax CS, regardless of who prepared the return. If the ERO is also the paid preparer, then UltraTax CS marks the Check if also paid preparer checkbox on the form. UltraTax CS completes the Paid Preparer Use Only section only if the paid preparer is not the ERO.
