A member of a federal consolidated C Corporation income tax return can file its separate New Jersey return following the steps enumerated below. After the federal electronic file has been generated for the consolidated income tax return, you may create the separate New Jersey electronic file for each member in this manner:

  1. Open the member return whose New Jersey return will be filed separately for state purposes.
  2. Choose File > Save As to create a client which will mirror that of the member client.
  3. In the newly created client, visit federal Screen ELF, clear the File this return electronically checkbox, and press Enter. Then revisit the File this return electronically checkbox and mark it again.

Note: If this step is not performed, the state electronic file will not be generated from within the cloned client.

  4. While still on federal Screen ELF, mark the Suppress creation of: Federal electronic file when only filing a state return checkbox, visit the state return and clear all critical diagnostic messages and all electronic filing diagnostic messages.
  5. Create the state electronic file by choosing File > Print Returns > Government copy > Create electronic file.

Note: Ensure the federal return is selected in Print > Options. If the federal return is not selected in Print > Options, the necessary federal attachment to the state return will not be generated.

  6. Transmit the newly created electronic file via CS Connect.
