When a date of death is entered on federal Screen 1040 for the taxpayer, a return for the taxpayer indicated as deceased and separate single return for the spouse are created.

To file a joint return, replace the deceased taxpayer information with the spouse information on federal Screen 1040. In addition, all information entered must have the TSJ code switched to match the taxpayer name and SSN with the correct information and income.

For example, if the taxpayer died during the year and the TSJ field was blank or coded T on their W2, the TSJ field would need to be changed to S to source those wages to the surviving spouse, and not the deceased taxpayer once the information was switched on federal Screen 1040.
