Specifying client data and integrated application file locations

You must add paths to the relevant file locations in UltraTax CS to change the location of current-year client data, to proforma data and/or customized documents from last year's application, and/or to import data into or export data from any integrated application (such as CS Accounting Products, Planner CS, CS Practice products, or FileCabinet CS).

Note: If you need to modify the location of your current-year UltraTax CS application, you must uninstall and reinstall UltraTax CS. Copying installed Windows applications from one location to another will cause problems in that application, so if you installed UltraTax CS to an incorrect location, you must uninstall the application. After you complete the uninstall process, you can reinstall UltraTax CS to the correct location. See Installing and maintaining your applications and data for more information on the installation process.

To enter or modify the locations of client data and integrated applications, complete the following steps. 

  1. Choose Setup > User Preferences.
  2. Click the File Locations tab.
  3. Click each option to view the locations of the files.
  4. If the location of the data files is not correct, highlight the appropriate item in the list, click the Modify Location button and choose the appropriate data location(s) from the drop-down list(s). Keep in mind that only locations that have been entered in the Setup > System Configuration > Data Locations tab are included in the list.

Notes

  • If you use Accounting CS and you want to share data (such as W-2 values and general client information), click the CS Accounting products option and modify the file locations for Accounting CS. This location is only used by the data sharing feature, and you do not need to change settings in order to import general ledger balances from Accounting CS.
  • FileCabinet CS paths are designated from within FileCabinet CS. Use the drop-down list for FileCabinet CS in the Modify Data Location dialog to update the path information in UltraTax CS.
  • You can add a File Drawer data location only if you are not licensed for FileCabinet CS.
  • To verify or change Fixed Assets CS data information, click the current year UltraTax CS option.
  • Click the Other option to verify or change file locations for third-party applications and the UltraTax/BNA Bridge.
