The Roll Forward feature in Workpapers CS enables you to copy an existing engagement binder to use as a starting point for the next year.

  • A new engagement is made for the new period using the structure of the original engagement binder (no changes are made to the original).
  • The dates for the engagement binder can be changed in the Engagement Binders screen.
  • Workpaper signoffs, history, and notes are not carried into the new engagement binder. Workpaper assignments are carried into the new binder only if the Retain workpaper assignments checkbox is marked in the wizard.
  • Links in Excel and Word workpapers are updated to reflect the balances based on the current engagement period end date. For example, if there is an Excel workpaper that displays 2012 and 2011 data, after rolling forward the engagement binder to 2013, the statement will now display 2013 and 2012 data.

When should you roll forward an engagement?

The Roll Forward process can take place any time during the engagement process, but is usually begun after work in the engagement binder has been completed, or is close to completion. The existing engagement binder is used as a template to create next year's engagement binder.

Notes

  • You must advance the client to the next Fiscal Year to have the next year's dates reflected in the new engagement binder.
  • The Roll Forward can only be performed by staff members who have the appropriate privilege assigned to them. For details about security in the application, see Security overview.

The roll forward process is similar to creating an engagement binder from an existing engagement. The following benefits are available when you use the Roll Forward option instead of adding an engagement binder based on an existing one from the Engagement Binders screen.

  • The Roll Forward process automatically selects the current engagement binder.
  • The Roll Forward process determines if the workpaper should be included, excluded or replaced in the next engagement binder.
  • Workpapers that are replaced are updated with the template workpaper of your choice.
  • Workpaper assignments can be retained.
