Setting a solution for a project or task in Practice CS

Solutions are used to link Practice CS projects and/or tasks to other applications. Once a solution is added to a project or task, an icon appears in the Solution column of any project screen (such as Actions > Manage Projects). Clicking the solution icon will trigger certain actions depending on which solution is assigned.

Below is a list of available solutions. Click the link to view the corresponding actions:

  • Opens the client in UltraTax.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when the client is closed in UltraTax.
  • Opens the client in Accounting CS.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when the client is closed in Accounting CS.
  • Opens the client in Financial Analysis CS.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when the client is closed in Financial Analysis CS.
  • Opens the client in Fixed Assets CS.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when the client is closed in Fixed Assets CS.
  • Opens Microsoft Word. If specified, a particular document can be opened in Microsoft Word.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when Microsoft Word is closed or when the specified document is closed, if one was specified.
  • Opens Microsoft Excel. If specified, a particular document can be opened in Microsoft Excel.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*. The Desktop Timer will stop when Microsoft Excel is closed or when the specified document is closed, if one was specified.
  • Opens the specified application.
  • Starts the Desktop Timer*.

*The Desktop Timer will only start if you have security access to timers and have Start Timer for Projects marked in Setup > User Preferences > Time & Expense Entry tab.

Add solution

To a project or task template:

  1. In Practice CS, go to Setup.
  2. Choose Templates, then Projects.
  3. Select the project template, then the Edit button.
  4. To add a solution to the project, stay on the Main tab. Select the Select solution drop-down and choose the solution.
  5. To add a solution to a task, go to the Tasks tab. Highlight the task, then select the Edit button. Use the Select solution drop-down and choose the solution.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Enter to save the changes.

To a client project or client task:

  1. In Practice CS, go to Actions then Manage Projects.
  2. Right-click the project and choose Edit Selected Projects.
  3. To add a solution to the project, stay on the Main tab. Use the Select solution drop-down to choose the desired solution.
  4. To add a solution to the task, click the Tasks tab. Highlight the task, then select Edit. Use the Select solution drop-down to choose the desired solution.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Enter to save the changes.

Additional instructions

There are special considerations for the following solutions. 

Adding UltraTax CS as a solution:

Adding Microsoft Word or Microsoft Excel as a solution:

  • You have the option of entering a file path to open a specific MS Word or MS Excel document. To do that, select the ellipsis button next to the File path field and browse to the file.
  • If you don't specify a file path, Practice CS will open MS Word or MS Excel to a blank screen and you'll have to manually open the document.

Adding Other as a solution:

  • If you choose Other as the solution, you'll need to specify a solution path for Practice CS to link to the solution.  To choose a solution path, click the ellipsis button next to the Solution path field and choose the .exe file for the solution.
  • You can't use the Other solution to open a certain document or client. Practice CS will open the program based on the .exe file, but won't open any data within that program.
