Use this procedure to print federal and state extension forms for one client or a batch of clients.

Note: This procedure prints one copy of the extension following the government collation defined in the Return Collation dialog. If desired, you can modify this collation. For example, to prevent the extension transmittal letter and extension filing instructions from printing with the extension, change the print condition for the extension transmittal letter and extension filing instructions to Never in the government collation in the Return Collation dialog in Setup > 1041 Fiduciary.

  1. Open the client for whom you want to file an extension. If the client does not yet exist in the current-year application, proforma the prior-year client or add a new client.

To print an extension, complete the following steps.

    • Enter any additional information on Screen PayExt in the Payments folder.
    • If applicable, retrieve general ledger balances from Write-Up CS or Trial Balance CS for each client for whom an extension should be filed.
    • Access other input screens as needed to enter the preliminary tax data UltraTax CS should use when calculating the tax. Note that you can specify a balance due by entering an amount in the Balance due on extension (Force) field in Screen PayExt.
  2. Each client's name, address, and extension date prints on the form. UltraTax CS assumes the following extended dates. If a date other than the default date is required, enter the date on Screen PayExt.
    • The 30th day of the ninth month on Form 7004 for 1041 trust and estate returns that are not bankruptcy estate returns.
    • The 15th day of the tenth month on Form 7004 for Form 1041-QFT, Form 1041 bankruptcy estates, and Form 3520-A returns.
    • The 15th day of the tenth month on Form 8868 for Form 1041-A and Form 5227 returns.
    • The 15th day of the tenth month on Form 4868 for Form 1040NR returns.
  3. Choose File > Print Extensions.
  4. By default, UltraTax CS prints the first extension of both the federal and state returns. To print only the federal extension, click the Options button and make sure that only the Federal checkbox is marked.

Note: If the security configuration allows for user-defined print options, you can set various print options for all extensions printed from this workstation.

  5. To print extensions for clients other than, or in addition to, the current client, click the Clients button and select the clients for whom extensions should print.
  6. Click the Print button.

Note: When preparing the extended return, if the extension was printed without any tax amount or balance due, you must enter the amount of any preliminary tax paid in the Paid with extension field on Screen PayExt. If UltraTax CS calculated the amount due, that amount automatically appears in the Paid with extension field on Screen PayExt unless you have entered a different amount in that field.
