- If your firm used UltraTax CS last year and has renewed its licenses for this year, complete the tasks listed below (as applicable) to configure application settings for your firm.
- If you just installed UltraTax CS for the first time, see Configuring UltraTax CS as a new user for an overview of the applicable setup tasks.
Initial setup tasks
Before you begin processing returns, complete the tasks below in the order specified.
- Proforma data and customized items from the prior-year application: Import the client data, customized client documents and print collations, and data-entry display settings from the prior-year version of UltraTax CS.
- Verify or configure data locations: Make sure you have the desired locations specified for UltraTax CS client data and asset data.
- Determine whether to use firm-wide or user-defined print options: You can set identical print options for all UltraTax CS users in your firm, or allow each user to specify their own.
- Configure your firm's electronic filing information: Start by entering your firm's Electronic Filing Identification Number (EFIN) in the Setup > Office Configuration > E-Filing tab. If your firm filed returns electronically last year, the firm's EFIN will automatically transfer from the prior-year application.
Configuring optional UltraTax CS features
The following tasks can help improve your firm's workflow and add efficiency to the return preparation process.
- Verify CS Connect options: Confirm that CS Connect is configured to automatically download and apply application updates. You can choose when updates are applied and whether or not you want CS Connect to download electronic filing acknowledgments.
- Create and assign default user preferences: Set up a template of common user preference settings that is applied to all UltraTax CS users in your firm.
- Configure custom status events: Track the progress of your client's returns in UltraTax CS by creating customized status events to suit your firm's workflow.
- Determine appearance of printed returns and other output: You can customize options related to printing returns, extensions, client documents, and more.
- Mask Social Security Numbers on 1040 returns: If you prepare returns for clients doing business overseas, you can hide your client's Social Security Numbers on all tax return documents by enabling SSN masking.
- Set options for backing up client data to FileCabinet CS, if you are licensed for that application and have it installed.
